Charleston, South Carolina was one of the first settlements in the USA and its history is one of the important parts of America. Charleston’s past is plenty of sudden changes and bloody wars, from the Revolutionary War to the War between the States, and the Civil Rights movement. This country has been at the centre of many conflicts throughout history. The devastation of war can be seen at Cowpens National Battlefield, which is in the north part of the state. In this place in 1781 the Colonials won one of their most important battles against the British Army. Around the town of Camdem, which is South Carolina's first inland city, established as a trading post in the year 1730, 14 War of Independence battles were fought.
Because of a great reconstruction, into the 20th century, South Carolina was part of an active change in which manual labour was replaced by machines because of the invention of the cotton gin and the Industrial Revolution. This brought Charleston prosperity after the Second World War and for 30 years more.
Fort Sumter, in Charleston Harbour, is the site where the first shots were fired between the North and South and the nation was spiralled into the American Civil War. This war would divide the nation and crippled the growth of the South for more than 100 years.
On Christmas Day in 1830, America’s first train used for passenger service made its first run for six miles. The steam locomotive went from Charleston, South Carolina to the Savannah River. The city of Charleston is serenely located at the tip of a Peninsula formed by the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, which join to form Charleston Harbour and empty into the Atlantic Ocean.
In Mount Pleasant, Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, visitors are allowed to climb aboard the USS Yorktown, the second United States Aircraft Carrier. It fought many important and bloody battles in the Second World War, voyaged the western Pacific Ocean during the Cold War and recovered the crew of the first manned spacecraft to circle the moon, Apollo 8. Visitors can also see exhibits of bomber and fighter planes.
